Overwhelmed by Supplements?

Here's Where to Start

Walk into any feed store or pet store, and it's easy to become overwhelmed by the number of supplements available. Joint support, gut health, calming formulas, immune boosters...you name it, there's a product for it!

The truth is, there are a lot of great supplements out there, and I'm thankful we have them. But it's also important to remember that everyone is trying to sell a product. Before you buy the next "must-have" supplement, take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Start by Asking the Right Questions

Before adding another supplement to your horse's or pet's routine, ask yourself:

  • Am I trying to maintain good health, or am I trying to address a specific health concern?
  • Are they meeting their nutritional requirements through their diet?
  • Is there an underlying issue that needs to be addressed first?

Start with the Individual

A dog eating a balanced raw diet may have very different nutritional needs than a dog eating a commercial diet. Age, workload, health status, and diet all play a role in determining what, if anything, should be supplemented.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Maintenance vs. Therapeutic Support

One of the biggest questions I ask is:

Am I simply maintaining health, or do I need a therapeutic dose?

Those are two completely different goals.

Sometimes a small amount of a supplement is all that's needed to support overall wellness. Other times, when we're dealing with a specific health concern, a therapeutic dose may be necessary.

It's important to know the difference because not every supplement contains enough of an ingredient to make a meaningful impact. Sometimes you're paying for the brand name or the marketing rather than an effective amount of the ingredient you're looking for.

Learning to read supplement labels can make a big difference.

Do They Need the Supplement... or Do They Need Better Absorption?

This is something I think about a lot.

In a perfect world, most animals shouldn't have to stay on multiple supplements for life.

If they do, I start asking why.

Are they actually absorbing the nutrients they're eating? If digestion and absorption aren't working properly, adding more supplements may not solve the problem. Sometimes the real issue is supporting the digestive system so the body can use the nutrients it's already receiving.

That's getting to the root cause instead of simply adding another product.

My Approach

One of the things I enjoy most about what I do is looking at the whole picture.

Using the tools available to me, I can help determine whether a supplement is actually benefiting your horse or pet, whether something different is needed, or whether the focus should be on improving nutrition and absorption first.

Every animal is unique, which is why every wellness plan should be unique too.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to supplements, don't let the marketing make the decision for you.

Start with a balanced diet. Ask the right questions. Know whether you're supporting maintenance or addressing a specific concern. And always remember that supplements should support the body. Not replace good nutrition or healthy body function.

My goal is always to help owners understand the "why" behind their animal's health so they can make confident decisions and become the best stewards of their horse's or pet's well-being.
